The Importance of a Clean Elevator for Your Business

What a Clean Elevator Will Do for Your Business

Regularly cleaning your company’s elevator may not seem like an important priority, but failing to keep your elevator clean can negatively impact your business. In addition to regular maintenance and testing for elevator efficiency and safety, cleaning your elevator is essential to its operations and to your business’s success.

A Letter From Our President

Hello, fellow Champion Elevator employees. This Q1, we have enjoyed steady growth across the board. We have also maintained our high standard of work and excellent reputation. Your efforts and contributions to the company are greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, we are also mourning the loss of one of our own, Joseph Rosa. We send our prayers and deepest condolences to his loved ones, including his wife Karina, his parents, his brothers, and the rest of his family.

If you would like to show your support by contributing a donation to the Rosa family, please visit our Gofundme fundraiser. All donations are greatly appreciated.

As we continue into Q2, I encourage each and every one of you to be vigilant about safety. This means being aware of the Safe9 safety guidelines, as well as continuing to follow all CDC protocols to combat the spread of COVID-19. Together, we will emerge from this difficult period stronger than before.

Thank you all for your continued hard work and contributions to Champion Elevator Corp.

Service Department – Q1 Update

Hello again to our fellow Champion employees. As we come to the end of our first quarter of 2021, we are still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on all our daily lives at work and at home. Hopefully, there is some light at the end of the tunnel with the distribution of vaccines and some herd immunity. Please continue to follow the protocols set by the CDC at work and at home to keep everyone safe.

We are also struggling with the tragic accident that has stricken one of own. We offer our deepest condolences and prayers for the wife and family of Joseph Rosa. May he Rest in Peace. This tragedy has hit us hard, and I hope everyone has taken time to grieve in their own way. It is a stark reminder of how dangerous the profession we work in can be. We ask all of you to follow the safety processes everyday so you can go home each night and enjoy being with your family.

This quarter, we have continued to add to our steady growth. We have signed over 100 new elevators under Service contracts. That is due to the good reputation we are getting from our existing customers and in the work you are doing. We also welcome Neil Myers to our Service Department; Neil is assigned to our Manhattan area.

We also recently completed our Quarterly Safety Training. This session was very well put together and it was good to see everyone in person. We urge everyone to follow the Safe9 absolute safety guidelines.

Be safe.

Repair Operations Department

Ted Mazola, Vice President Repair Operations

Repair Department – Q1 Update

The repair department started 2021 with a fresh set of goals to strive for in the new year. We had some major success so far with repair work stemming from the Icon garage portfolio brought on through the Westech acquisition. One big job was a leftover modernization project that had been stalled at a parking garage for about a year. We assigned the work to our very own Victor Figueroa, who took control of the scope of work and customer expectations to deliver a quality job. Thank you, Victor.

This past month, we were able to bring on a new team, welcoming Scott and Sean Dorsey. Scott is a long-time industry veteran and is teaching his son the elevator repair trade. They are a welcome addition to the Champion family.

We are looking forward to the start of spring and a better second quarter. As we begin to enjoy the warmer weather, please remember to be mindful of others around you while driving. There will be more people on the streets.

Stay safe and be well.

Modernization & Construction Department

Robert Masterson, President Modernization/Construction

Modernization & Construction Department – Q1 Update

The Modernization department is in full force. Our first quarter has proven to be a tough one with the continued rise in COVID-19 cases and with the two snowstorms that were dumped on New York.

Snowstorms leave large accumulations of snow and ice on roof tops. The snow creates additional obstacles and challenges. It also leaves dangerous icing conditions on pathways and staircases. Extra time is required to clear the snow and to make safe passageways to elevator machine rooms and staging areas.
The Completion of Jobs This Quarter

During the first quarter, our mod teams successfully completed and returned to service 19 elevators.

All 19 elevators passed the final acceptance test. Most of the elevators were followed up by an elevator consultant. All 21 elevators received a clean report with no punch list items.

Well done, everyone.

Working safe is the #1 priority at Champion Elevator Corp.

Every job is a QUALITY JOB!

Champions are always professional.

Testing & Violations Department – Q1 Update

I am very pleased to announce that Casey Isselin has joined the Inspection and Violations team as our new Inspections Coordinator. She will be scheduling all tests for New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester and Long Island.

As of March 1, 2021, as required by Local Law 160 of 2017, the Department will deny New Building and Alteration-CO permits in DOB NOW if $25,000 or more in covered arrears is owed to New York City with respect to the property for which the permit is being sought, or the owners of the property together owe $25,000 or more in covered arrears to the City. Please read our Service Notice.

What are Covered Arrears?

“Covered arrears” may include any of the following that are not currently in the appeals process:

  • Unpaid fines, civil penalties, or judgments entered by a court or OATH; and
  • Unpaid and past due fees or other charges assessed by DOB.

Owner’s Attestation Requirement

Owners will have to answer the following two questions in the Owner’s Attestation on Plan/Work (PW1) applications in DOB NOW: Build:

  • Are $25,000 or more in covered arrears, that are not currently in the appeals process, owed to the City with respect to the property for which the permit is being sought?
  • Do the owners of the property owe, in aggregate, $25,000 or more in covered arrears to the City?

Owners who answer ‘Yes’ to one or both of the questions will not be allowed to request a permit in DOB NOW: Build for a New Building or Alteration-CO filing unless they certify that one of the exceptions listed in Local Law 160 of 2017 applies.

For DOB NOW inquiries or support, please use the DOB NOW Help Form at www.nyc.gov/dobnowhelp.

Let’s continue this strong start to the year!
